Why would my business need a web application rather than a website?
A website presents information, while a web application stores data, enforces business rules and allows several people to work on the same data at once. A common sign that a web application is needed is a spreadsheet that several departments depend on, with no audit trail and frequent conflicts when people edit it simultaneously.
Custom applications are most valuable when a process has important rules. Building the application documents and enforces those rules, so the process no longer depends on one individual’s knowledge.
Integration is another common reason. Much operational effort is spent moving data manually between systems, and an application that connects them removes that work and its errors.
If an off-the-shelf product meets around eighty per cent of your needs and you can adapt to the rest, buying it is usually the better choice. Custom software is justified when the process is central to how you compete, or when available products would compromise what your customers value.
