What is multi-tenancy and why does it matter?

Multi-tenancy is an architecture in which a single system serves many customers while keeping each customer’s data isolated. The isolation strategy, whether a shared schema with a tenant identifier, a schema per tenant or a database per tenant, affects every query, migration and compliance requirement. It is one of the most important early decisions in a SaaS project.
