What are GEO and AEO, and do they replace SEO?
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) aim to make your content the source AI systems cite when answering questions, in tools such as Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. They build on SEO rather than replacing it, as AI systems rely on similar signals of crawlability, clarity and authority. The main difference is that a cited answer may not produce a click.
As generative search grows, AI Overviews have been shown to reduce click-through rates for the pages beneath them. Being cited as a source is therefore increasingly valuable, and traffic alone may understate results.
Generative systems favour content that states key points clearly and early, is organised into self-contained passages, includes specific details such as figures, dates and names, and is corroborated by other sources. These are also established SEO best practices.
Measurement of AI-driven visibility is still developing, so reported GEO figures should be treated as estimates.
Our approach serves both traditional search and AI answers: complete, well-structured content on a fast, crawlable site with credible external references.
