How do you measure whether SEO is working?
SEO is measured against business outcomes: qualified organic conversions, attributable revenue or pipeline, growth in the number of queries generating impressions, and visibility for the terms that describe your services. Rankings and traffic help explain changes in these figures but are not the goal in themselves.
We use Search Console for query-level impressions, clicks and positions, an analytics platform with clearly defined conversions, and rank tracking for a focused set of commercially important terms.
Two indicators are particularly useful: the number of unique queries generating impressions, which is an early sign that content is working, and the balance between branded and non-branded traffic, which shows whether you are reaching new demand.
Reporting frequency should match the work. Technical fixes can be assessed within weeks, while content and authority work needs several months.
Some AI-generated answers satisfy queries without a click, so we track impressions and visibility alongside traffic.
