What is an MVP, and what should it include?
A minimum viable product (MVP) is the smallest version of a product that allows real users to complete the full task it is designed for. It should be a focused, complete workflow rather than a broad set of unfinished features.
When reducing scope, it is more effective to narrow the focus, for example to one customer segment or one workflow, and complete it to a high standard than to build every feature partially.
Some elements should always be included: reliable authentication, tools for your team to monitor and resolve issues, data integrity and clear error handling.
Elements that can usually wait include advanced permissions, bulk operations, integrations not used by early customers, detailed preference settings and elaborate onboarding.
The purpose of an MVP is to learn from real usage at the lowest cost, which requires users to be able to complete the full task.
