What is the difference between technical, on-page and off-page SEO?
Technical SEO covers whether search engines can access and understand your site, including crawlability, indexing, architecture, rendering, speed, structured data, canonical tags, redirects and duplicate content. On-page SEO covers each page’s content and structure, including topic coverage, headings, internal links, titles and descriptions. Off-page SEO covers references and links from other websites and the overall reputation of your brand.
Technical issues are usually the quickest and least costly to resolve, as they remove obstacles. For example, pages accidentally blocked from indexing can recover within weeks once the issue is fixed.
On-page work is ongoing, as content is assessed against whatever currently ranks for a given query.
Off-page authority builds slowly. It is best earned through work worth referencing, such as original research, useful tools and widely discussed projects. Purchased links carry significant risk.
When diagnosing an underperforming site, we check technical factors first, then content, then authority.
