How do you decide between native and cross-platform development?
It depends on what the application is built around. For apps centred on forms, lists, data and workflows, which covers most business software, cross-platform development offers one codebase, one team and one set of business rules, with a user experience comparable to native. For apps built around continuous camera use, real-time graphics, background processing, deep platform integration or maximum performance, fully native development is worth its higher cost. We build with React Native and Flutter, and natively in Swift and Kotlin.
The quality of a cross-platform app depends mainly on whether each platform’s interface conventions are respected, which applies equally to native development.
Cross-platform development means each feature is specified, tested and fixed once, keeping both platforms consistent. Native development requires two implementations and two release processes, which over several years usually outweighs the initial build cost.
A hybrid approach is often effective: a cross-platform app with native modules for the specific features that need platform APIs.
Native development is the clear choice for apps whose core function is platform-specific, such as continuous camera capture with on-device processing and background upload. We confirm the right approach during discovery.
